The potatoes are back on, per Steve.   The Kettle is at Steve's and the wood is piled up.  Even if you don't do mornings, it will be an experience to sit around the applebutter kettle and drink your coffee with the smell of breakfast coming out of the kitchen.  If any of you have the means to video, would you please come prepared to make some short clips?  Vonda, David, Timmy and Daniel would really like to see some of the activities/people throughout the weekend.  Trish, can you video on your ipad?  I know...but you see...I'm not tech saavy.

Unfortunately Tim and Cindy will be unable to join us Labor Day.  Cindy's sister suffered a heart attack at the end of June and a stroke last Tuesday.  Shen then had surgery on her carotoid artery on Friday.  She is still in CCU at the hospital and after she is stable, they are moving her back to the nursing home.  Please include her in your prayers.

On Sunday, we will be eating our main meal between 1:30 and 2:00 p.m.

Below are several lists relative to Labor Day.  I will keep these lists updated as people give me their information.  It is imperative that we know who is coming and for how long since it will be going on for two days, because we will need to have enough food to eat.

Steve will be cooking breakfast on Saturday and on Sunday for anyone who wants to come.  We will need sausage and eggs for those meals.  (We decided to scrap the potatoes, to make it easier on all the cooks).  We will also need to know who plans to come to those meals.

We will be eating our main meal on Sunday between 1:30 and 2:00 p.m.

We do NOT need disposable plates, cups and plastic utensils.  Trish is providing those.

We will be making applebutter on Saturday beginning around 5:30 a.m.  We will NOT be peeling apples since there was no apple crop this year.  Instead I will be bringing Mommy's canned applesauce (which she canned in half gallon jars) which I took when we cleaned out the cellar.  There will be NO charge for the applebutter.  Therefore, we will have to divide up what we make to make sure everyone who wants it gets some.  A family member has covered that cost.

Also, you do NOT have to bring drinks.  The same family member is covering that cost also.

All the chicken is taken care of.

Hey I just wanted to let you know I got another large can of cheese, 4 bags of chips, 3 dozen eggs for breakfast on Sunday I,m also going to make cupcakes, brownies, and green beans for Sunday.  I was going to get a couple of boxes of sausage but Walmart was out.

I just wanted to remind everyone about the air show Sept. 7-9  :)  Hope to see ya!!

Me, tanner, And Jacob will be there for all the meals I guess. I will do Mac and cheese and hopefully corn on the cob and some tomatoes if they are ripe. I will probably fix potatoes some way  and dessert.

I made a yard sale purchase this morning that really thrilled me.  I do not know what I will do with it, but I bought an awl for 50 cents.  Do any of you remember Mommy (probably more often Daddy) sewing with theirs?  Does someone have it?  I remember they used to keep it (if my memory is correct) in the flat grey box on the dresser.  When you get old, it doesn't take much to thrill a body, huh!

Zac and I will be in by Friday evening but I'm not sure about what we will be bringing yet for Saturday or Sunday. I will think about it and let you know.

Please refer to my post on August 20, which is where I am keeping the list of who is coming, what days they will be there, and what foods they will be providing Labor Day.  Those of you who have not weighed in on attendance and food, please do so ASAP so we will know whether we will have enough food.

For Sunday, I will make Pumpkin Bread, Tailgate sandwiches (ham and cheese on Hawaiian rolls) and roasted veggies on skewers.

I will bring 2 packs of hot dogs and buns for Saturday evening, 1 box graham crackers, and reese cups and marshamallows to make enough smores out of the box of graham crackers (not sure how many it will make).  Still deciding about what else for Sunday :) 

I will bring two pkg sausage  and 2 doz. eggs for Saturday Breakfast.  I will bring two pkgs hotdogs with buns for Saturday wiener roast with a watermelon.  I will do two desserts for Sunday Dinner

How much do you think the applebutter might cost per jar?  I was thinking of getting some for my Sunday School class for Christmas :)  Since I don't buy it I don't know what it would cost.  Can you give an estimated price?

Monica, Thanks for your enthusiasm!  Will this be a "Trophy" we can pass around from year to year?  We will be compiling a list of things we need from each of you, once we know who all is coming.  Please...We need you to find out from your families and let us know.  About the Applebutter...we will need to know from you all, who will be wanting to purchase it because, a kettle will make around 80 pints.  If we don't have enough interest in buying it, then we can't make it.  What would we do with all of it?  (It makes great Christmas gifts)  I personally don't need applebutter,  I still have it from the last Applebutterfest.   No, we will not be making it on the stove...If it rains, we will need a canopy of some sort.

I was wondering if someone needs to pitch in and help get stuff for the nachos, wiener roast and s'mores on Saturday or has that already been taken care of?

I will do deviled eggs for Sunday (how many, would 2 dozen be enough or more) and I'll come up with something else and let you know in the next day or two.  I'll also bring some kiddie drinks for the weekend :)

We can take care of the Cornhole trophy and I'll get Mark to come up with a tournament roster as well.  It would be nice if we could get some of Teresa's neighbors to play as well :)  We can bring our boards and if Steve will let us use his boards we can have 2 games going at the same time!!

Mom and I were discussing weather.  If it rains, how will we do apple butter?  Will we be able to make it on the stove?  Let's all pray for beautiful weather and we won't have to bother with alternate plans :P

We will be there Saturday and Sunday.  I'd like to participate in buying chicken if it means I don't have to cook. ( I think that is best for everyone involved).  Maybe Janet and I can be in charge of coming up with other games and contests for the kids.

Of course, we would have adult supervision for the slide to reduce the risk of injury!!  And if we make sure there isn't a ramp at the bottom of it I think everything should be ok :)

For the record, I am totally against a slide or anything of that nature that goes down the hill at Steve's and I completely do not support this idea! Even if there isn't snow on the ground! Mederma is good stuff but why use it if you don't have to? lol

Oh My Goodness!  Yes, It is 2 weeks...that makes it a whole lot easier.  The slide looks wonderful and look how far they could stretch it to go down below the driveway in the field.  I know   , with all the ingenuity in this family, someone or ones, could make this happen...I mean, we use to sleigh ride on car hoods!!

I was thinking if any of the guys have some stuff lying around their house (not intended for any use :) to make a slide that would be such fun for the little kids.  Marleigh loved riding this last year.  I'm not sure what it's made out of but the slide is some kind of plastic something.  The part the kids sit on is cut out of the small white plastic keg looking barrels.  I've seen them on farms before, I'm guessing to keep water in for cows or pigs maybe??? Anywho...they cut two hole in one end and tied a rope for the kids to hold onto.  Of course the top of the slide is built up by hay bails.  Or maybe the guys could come up with another plan to make a slide out of other material??  I don't want anyone to have to buy anything for this, I was just thinking if the materials were lying around somewhere we could put one together :)  Let me know what you fellers' think :) 

I was thinking we have 2 weeks from today instead of one?  Is that right?  This is going to be for September 1st and 2nd?  I know we will have to have everything in order before then but I need to know when to arrive :)  If it is the 1st and 2nd then we will be there :)  I'll ask Mark about being in charge of the Corn Hole tournament, I'm sure he will oblige lol.  I will probably be chasing Marleigh around so I won't have much time for that.  I'm definitely up for the apple butter.  I've never done it before but it looks fun and is such wonderful greeting to the fall of the year.  I'll be thinking about what we can bring (food wise) on both days and get back to you.  Love to all :)

Labor Day

Hey all

I am going to be the mouth for our Labor Day get together. Keep your comments to yourself.  You know Teresa ain't bossy enough!  First of all, we need to know who will be coming.  It is going to be a 2 day event.  We will be making Applebutter (for the young and old alike) over the weekend, outside.  Teresa says they have apples so we will be peeling on Saturday (bring your sharpest knife) and cooking on Sunday.  As of right now, I will furnish the supplies (Sugar, cinnamon candy, vinegar, cloves, jars, and lids) and we will price the jars when we are finished, to cover the cost of the supplies only.   Paul, we will be needing your kettle!  We are in the beginning stages of planning...and yes, we are off to a late start, but we can still "git 'er done"!   We are hoping to have Nachos on Saturday, desserts (if you provide them) and a Weiner Roast and S'mores on Saturday evening.  We would like to have a Cornhole Tournament, with a Trophy to be awarded.  Monica and Mark...if you are coming, we would like to put you in charge of that.  If not, we'll designate another vict...I mean lucky person.  We are hoping to have Redneck Horseshoes (Addy), maybe a hayride, pumpkin carving...and anything else you nieces and nephews can come up with.  Like I said, we are in the early stages of planning but if you want to have a good time, then we need you to help.  It will be what we make it.  We will be having a Treadway style dinner (bring your favorite dish) on Sunday (time to be decided later) so we will need to know before hand what you are bringing so if we need to make something else, we will have time.  We're thinkin' that maybe our main dish will be Fried Chicken from the Dawson Store or Walmart...if anyone would like to purchase some or all of it, it would save you from cooking.  Now you can't all do that.  I knew what you were thinkin'!  Teresa is inviting some of her neighbors so that would give you a chance to visit with them, as well.

As the time gets closer, we hope to post an agenda with approximate times.  Ruth, will you compile a list of the food like you did before, from everyone's posting.  We only have one week from today!!!  If you read the blog and your family doesn't, will you please pass this information along to them.  Thanks and look forward to seeing the blog come alive!  For those of you who can't come, we will try our best to share as much as we can on the blog!

Robert Lee Holland
DAWSON — Robert Lee Holland, 86, of  Dawson, passed away Tuesday, Aug. 14, 2012, in the Raleigh General Hospital, Beckley, following a long illness.
Born Aug. 23, 1925, at Dawson, he was the son of the late Pank S. and Alta M. Statts Holland.
Bob was a World War II US Naval veteran, a member of the Smoot Ruritans, the Smoot V.F.D., the Alderson Masonic Lodge and a member of the Meadow Grove Baptist Church.
He worked at Quillen Lumber Company and then for the WV Department of Highways.
In addition to his parents, he is preceded in death by three brothers, Raymond, Claude and Edward Holland and four sisters, Lurleen Holland, Dorothy Lanham, Pauline Cook and Ruth Bryant.
Survivors include his wife of 62 years, Fern Flanagan Holland; a son, Robert W. Holland (Robin) of Fayetteville; two daughters, Alta Pence (Tommy) of Ronceverte and Gail Bragg (Dwayne Brackenridge) of Rupert; a sister, Genevieve Henson of Ronceverte; seven grandsons and nine great-grandchildren.
Services will be 2 p.m. Friday, Aug. 17, 2012, at Smathers Funeral Chapel, Inc., with Pastor Les Mullens officiating. Burial will follow in the Wallace Memorial Cemetery, Clintonville.
The service will conclude with the release of the White Flights.
Friends may call one hour before the service from 1 to 2 p.m. at the funeral home.

Treadway fall festival/reunion

We are having a family get together here the first weekend in Sept. sat. and sun if everyone is up for it, to include hay rides, pumpkin carving for the little ones and corn whole an other games if Addie can organize some, (hint,hint).  We had also talked about making apple butter and of course everyone's favorite food, I was just going to ask everyone to bring their favorite dish and drinks as always

Dan said that he was unaware that Clayton's mother was a Keeney.

Clayton and danny I imagine are having a grand time!  Along with all of the others there waiting on him.  Clayton just went to sleep. No apparent pain. I was there on Wednesday night and he wanted to sing hymns so we gathered around and sang what our memory would allow and in most cases his memory was better than ours.  For those that don't remember Clayton,  he is Emma's great granddad, Danny's great uncle.  He was an awesome man.

Clayton Clark Hutsenpiller

SMOOT — Clayton Clark Hutsenpiller, 88, of Smoot, WV, died Saturday, August 11, at Greenbrier Valley Medical Center of Parkinson's Disease.

Clayton was born on April 17, 1924, at Lawn, WV, the eighth child and fourth son of the late Milton B. "Mitt" Hutsenpiller an Arminta "Mintie" Keeney Hutsenpiller.

He attended the Woolard School at Dawson, called "Knob College," by students and graduates. He was a self-employed logger and worked in timber all of his adult life. He retired from logging in 2000 at the age of 76. He was named Logger of the Year in 1999 by the West Virginia Forestry Association. He was proud of his service in the United States Army during World War II. He was an MP during the Nuremberg War Crimes Trials. He attended the McElhenney Presbyterian Church. He was an avid bowler and bowled with the Ecumenical Church League for thirty years and then with the Over the Hill Gang for several years.

He was preceded in death by brothers Fred, Frank and Ray "Buster" Hutsenpiller, and sisters Clarice Hutsenpiller, Mary Good and Verna Douglas.

He is survived by his wife Billie Jean Hutsenpiller, sons David (Susan) Hutsenpiller and Michael Hutsenpiller; granddaughters, Sybil (Chad) Rodes and Shelly Hutsenpiller (Keith Chinault); great-granddaughter, Emma Jane Rodes, and great-grandsons, Aaron Evertt and Andrew Clayton Rodes; sister Erma Surbaugh and brother Gene Hutsenpiller (Mary Lou) and numerous nephews and nieces.

Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. on Tuesday, August 14, at the McElhenney Presbyterian Church in Grassy Meadows with Stewart McMurray officiating. Burial with Military Honors will follow at Wallace Memorial Cemetery. Visitation will be held Monday, August 13, from 6 till 8 at the funeral home. Family and friends will serve as pallbearers.

We found out why the amish don't like their picture taken. It would be bad for business if it got out that they drove 2013 mini vans and traded in the horses for John deere tractors. Lol.
